MOJO and the Mobile Public Library invite you to a screening of the film, "Thunder Soul", Jamie Foxx's 2010 music documentary. In the film, alumni from Houston's storied Kashmere High School Stage Band return home after 35 years to play a tribute concert for their beloved band leader who turned the struggling jazz band into a world-class funk powerhouse in the early 1970s. In 1972, the band was invited to the Mobile Jazz Festival to compete for the American High School Stage Band Festival, a national championship. J. C. McAleer III, a MJF founder and the 2018 MOJO Jazzalea Award winner, is interviewed in the documentary, explaining the Festival judges' challenges to making their final decision, making Kashmere the first Black band in the US to ever win the trophy. McAleer will receive the award at April's Jazz Jambalaya. 83 minutes, rated PG Free admission. Donations accepted.
